I want to set up a Fab City Hub from scratch

A step-by-step roadmap to design your strategic plan toward Fab City Hub.

This section is dedicated to citizens, entrepreneurs and local communities willing to set up a FCH in their local context.

The Fab City Hub Roadmap

The FCH Roadmap is a strategic plan that outlines a proposed step-by-step journey to be followed in order to set up a FCH. It has been built based on the 10 principles for Fab City Hubs, complemented with different other theoretical ressources and learnings from practical experimentations.

This Roadmap aims to provide a clear shared visualisation of required future steps in order to achieve the ultimate goal of setting up a fully functional Fab City Hub. The FCH Roadmap is a voluntarily oversimplified vision of a much more complex process, and of course, it does not capture all the details, the features and the challenges that will arise during the project. Rather, the FCH Roadmap is used to orient different community members and stakeholders and to facilitate their collaboration.

At the current stage of development, the sequence of the 14 FCH Steps forming the FCH Roadmap aims to suggest an order that follows the structure given by the 10 principles (Vision, Community, Infrastructure) moving from steps that are more general and less tangible (Vision) to ones that are more specific and tangible (Infrastructure).

Resist the urge to organize everything! Instead, aim for maximum viable chaos.

While an order of the steps is suggested, it is important to underline that setting up a FCH is not a linear and standardized model, so it is important to maintain an attitude of openness, resilience, and flexibility towards the many unplanned events you will face along the process.

Remember that creativity and disruptive ideas often happen in those transition spaces at the edge of order and disorder. While you want to achieve impact and be efficient in managing your project, you also need to foster creativity, maintaining a constant balance between order and disorder, planned and unplanned tasks. This is what can be referred to as "Maximum viable chaos", an approach that has been theorised by Francesca Pick inside the Ouishare organization.
