Guiding narration on the participatory process

Using the example of making an exhibition at Imagine IC as their experience directly inspired the conceptualisation of how the 9 Fab City Hubs teams could work on Part A of the Living Archive. This narration differs in tone from the other sections of this document, as it is meant to also help FCHs' teams implement it as a practice.

“ In The Showcase of Southeast, Imagine IC shows what we collect with the neighbourhood. The Showcase does not tell "the" story of Zuidoost [the Southeast area of Amsterdam], but shows a selection of all the things that have been brought together from 2014 to 2019 around themes such as faith, resistance or feeling at home.

In five years, residents of the area put more than 20 topics on the agenda, which were documented in meetings and exhibitions with their own belongings and archives. For the Showcase we chose objects that touched us and many others at the time. Together they tell a new story of the neighbourhood. We discovered a common thread through all the collected things and collections: continuous customizing. Southeast is a drawing-table-district. Here, people constantly negotiate space for their needs, habits and rituals, for their lifestyles and ambitions. Some are just there, and thus partly determine the image, the sound or the smell of the street. Others are taking action, such as for emancipation or against gentrification.

De Vitrine really can't keep up with this neighborhood. That's why we keep collecting. So join us! What do the collection(s) mean to you? What’s missing? ”
